Managing Director Gareth comes from a military background leading into the security industry. With progressing into such roles as security supervisor, operations manager and Close Protection Officer (CPO) he has gained a vast amount of experience over the years working in different roles and climates. Having tasked on numerous high-risk deployments including celebrity security and asset protection, Gareth decided to adapt his career path into the world of dog handling.
Having qualified back in 2010 with awarding body NASDU, he and General Purpose Dutch Herder Jumbo have been a unified team ever since.Previously, he has worked for a specialist dog handling company before H&A Protection Services. More recently, Gareth has specialised in drug and pyrotechnic detection with fully accredited DD Rocky.
From this growth and wealth of experience, H&A Protection Services LTD has recently expanded into new premises with a core office team based in Preston. Gareth’s vision and determination to ensure staff welfare, correct procedures and only the best quality service will keep H&A on the right path.
With a background in administration and accounting Helen fitted straight into the set-up at H&A. With her previous role as head landlady at numerous pubs in Lancashire her attitude of being stern and punctual definitely keeps all of the office and operational team in check. From April 2019, Helen is on well-earned maternity having her second child, good luck Helen and enjoy the ‘rest’.
Derren joins H&A Protection with a wealth of knowledge and experience from her other roles as event manager, security supervisor and detection dog handler. Everybody in the detection dog world knows how much of a key asset she is to any team so we are thrilled to be able to offer her the position of Detection Operations Manager and let her career develop. Derren loves nothing more than working her two dogs Max and Washington at different venues for different clients.
Dave joined us from one of the biggest security companies in the UK. With his vast knowledge and experience including enhanced search with the detection dogs, PIT trained, and supervisory experience in all types of events, Dave is a fantastic addition to our management structure.
Head Office’s newest addition is Jay Lowe who has joined us as GP Op’s Manager. Jay will oversee all logistics and deployments of our general purpose canine section from sites, to festivals, events and everything in between. Jay is a NASDU accredited trainer who will manage all continuous training of our dog teams..
Due to H&A Protection Services business growth, Michele has joined our team as administration and compliance manager to ensure we maximize our potential through British Standards compliance, vetting procedures, due diligence and all other administration documents are kept to our high standards. Michelle has fitted straight into our Head Office team and can’t wait for the festival season to begin.
General Purpose Dog Jumbo is the longest-standing H&A Protection Services canine partner who has been with handler and our Managing Director, Gareth Howlett, for 7 years after he was rescued at 6 months old from a shelter who was imminently going to be euthanized. A dutch herder with attitude, Jumbo on numerous occasions has shown his prowess in protecting his handler from potential assaults and dangerous situations. Even at the age of 7 (47 doggy years) he still likes to think he’s a puppy.
Meeka ‘The missile’ is our own GP NASDU Trainer Jay Lowe’s personal mean machine. She might be small but she’s still the boss as any aggressor would suitably find out. At only 3 years old she’s got plenty of energy and desire to please Jay and will do anything to protect him on the drop of his command.
Jay’s right hand man, who’s work ethic is mirrored by his hard working handler, is 6 year old Belgian Malinois Zander. His loyalty and determination is second to none as shown by the numerous dangerous situations he is put in but always excels under pressure and will actively deter any intruder or unwanted visitor. In his down-time Zander loves nothing more than showing off his obedience skills to other handlers in Jay’s training sessions with other working handlers and their canine companions.
Our newest recruit Bane is a black German Shepherd puppy with a white flash on his chest. He may look absolutely adorable but don’t be fooled he still chews everything in his way! We are very much looking forward to watching Bane grow and develop into a strong and powerful General Purpose dog, keep watching our instagram and facebook pages for pupdates’.
5 year old GP Czech Shepherd Shy has been in the company since it began with our excellent handlers Lisa and Brendan. The only thing Shy loves more than bacon is training for her favourite reward; her ball! She’s no stranger to testing weather conditions and harsh terrain yet loves the van more than her house.
One of our youngest General Purpose dogs with a big personality! Mya has only been in the industry 6 months however has proved herself to be an invaluable partner to handler Matty. Mya excels at both detection of intruders and pursuing the individuals with her fantastic sense of smell. Outside the work environment she enjoys nothing more than chasing her ball on her local walking fields or curling up for a well-earned rest with her pillow on the couch. Mya is definitely on the right path for a bright future with Matty and H&A.
Drug Detection Dog (DD) Rocky is big in stature and personality but is also a massive softy! Fully trained to find narcotics and pyrotechnics, Rocky is one of the leading detection dogs in our Preston-based company. His favourite type of searches are busy crowds entering venues where he can find numerous illegal substances which means LOTS of rewards and praises from his handler.
4 year-old Springador “Mad Max” definitely lives up to his name! He is known throughout the detection dog world as one of the best noses going and is as determined as handler Derren when it comes to confirming the possession of illegal and illicit substances.With numerous pyrotechnic, Class A and possession with intent to supply finds already in 2019 Through both Derren and Max’s hard work in continuation training and development they are a must-have canine partnership to any team.
Trained in both pyrotechnics (PDD) and Drugs (DD) Bailey has a lot of deployment experience for a canine that has been qualified less than a year ago. Her handler Amy is the first person to admit she was a difficult dog to train with however through hard work by her previous trainer and Amy’s dedication to continuous training, Bailey is smashing out every deployment and will be ‘one-to-watch’ this festival season with her already booked in on numerous H&A festivals.
Shankly is a white and liver springer spaniel drugs and pyrotechnic detection dog for handler Terry. Both Terry and Shankly have excelled in their first year in the industry with their professionalism and hard work to gain knowledge and experience by working all over the country in different venue including football stadiums, music concerts and nightclubs. H&A Protection Services believe Shankly will become a legend in his own right, like his namesake.
Cooper the red fox labrador was rescued by canine handler Frank who has turned him into one of the stand-out stars of the detection dog world. Trained on narcotics and pyrotechnics, Cooper has excelled himself this year finding numerous pyrotechnics on deployments to football stadia alone. He gets that excited to find his ball he literally jumps for joy! Frank and his DD and EDD dogs are an asset to any detection deployment.
Or Squashy Washy as he’s known is a small chocolate springador but often gets mistaken for a puppy labrador. He might be small but he’s definitely got a big attitude! Washy is one of our dedicated explosive detection dogs (EDD) who gets deployed to various clients nationwide with handler Derren. Washington comes from a highly-rated NASDU trainer in Wales who has also trained Washy’s brother and sister into fully trained explosive detection dogs too.
